I’m back for Day 2 of hair week on the blog, and today I’ve got some styling videos for you. Day 1 was laying the foundation for a great short haircut, so make sure you check out that post if you haven’t already. I promised you some styling videos, so I’m showing you how to style fine short hair and get volume, plus a bonus video of “Day 2 Hair”.
How to Style Fine Short Hair and Get Volume
Styling on Day One:
Remove Buildup
Let’s call day one Sunday, because that is usually when I use a buildup remover on my hair. It’s easier for me to use it weekly if I pick a day, and on the weekend I have more time. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, the secret to great short hair (especially when it’s fine) is product. But using a lot of product can lead to some buildup in your hair which weighs it down. Beautiful Nutrition Lemon Rinse is a great way to get rid of whatever hasn’t quite washed out of your hair that week. To use: Wash your hair like normal. (I use this shampoo & conditioner) Use the buildup remover after you wash and condition.
Before Blow Drying
Apply a small amount of MoraccanOil Smoothing lotion all over your hair to fight frizz. Spray Amika Bombshell Blowout Spray to just the roots. Be prepared for a little different feeling in your hair when blow drying, it’s what gives your hair the texture it needs to look full and have some volume. Blow dry. Check out this video of how I apply the products and blow dry this cut. I try to blow dry from underneath my hair a lot to help add volume.
Straighten and Add Volume
Next, touch up your hair with a straightening iron. Just smooth out your hair, stick straight is not the goal. Apply Keune Volumizing Powder as needed. The blowout spray does an amazing job at giving you lift and texture, but sometimes you still need some in a more targeted area. The volumizing powder is a lot easier to put just where you need it. Typically the crown of your head, just over your left ear, and the top right of your head.
A little goes a really long way, and your hair will feel gritty if you get too much! Just tap a small amount at your roots and use your fingers to kind of rub it into your hair. Spray more Amika Blowout Spray to the end of your hair to create a piecey look.
I stop there usually, but if you are a hairspray person, now would be the time to apply it. I personally only use it when I curl mine. You’re done! Day One takes the longest for me, but it still only takes about 15-20 minutes, including dry time.
Styling on Day Two:
Want to know a secret? Short hair almost always looks better a little bit dirty. I think dry shampoo has become popular enough that I’m not grossing you out right now, but you really need to stop washing your hair every day!
I’ve had people tell me that their hair gets way too oily to ever do that, and that may be true. I don’t know your hair. But I would suggest giving it a try for at least two weeks. When you wash your hair daily, you are training your body to produce a certain amount of oil. If you cut back on the number of washes a week, your body will adjust. It may take a week or two, but the oil production really should calm down.
Now, you will have to get used to the feeling of second day hair. Your scalp does not feel the same on day two as it does on the days you wash. But once your body figures out your new routine, your hair will stop looking a little greasy on days you don’t wash it.
Find the Right Dry Shampoo for You
There are so many different brands and formulas now, and they are not all the same. The very first brand I tried left my hair feeling really dried out, it was just too much for my hair. Ask around, keep trying until you find one you like! I am currently using Oribe Gold Lust from a recent Birchbox. It’s pricey, but I like it. I also like R&CO, Amika, and Klorane.
Ok, so here is all I do on Day Two:
Spray dry shampoo all over your head, aiming for the roots. Allow to dry, a minute or so.
Use your fingers to restyle your hair. If it’s not perfectly straight anymore, that can be a good thing. If you really want to straighten it again, go for it. I never do.
Apply more Keune Volumizing Powder as needed.
You’re done. That is literally all I do on day two, unless I decide to curl it. But I usually wait for day 3…
